UFC 102 Breakdown

August 30, 2009 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comment

I have to start by congratulating Mike Russow on his 1st UFC win. He defeated Justin McCully by unanimous decision! I would also like to congratulate Todd Duffee for his :07  record KO against Tim Hague. I didn’t see that coming…and neither did Tim! ( Thanks for the reminder rillaman )

UFC 102 was an all around great night of fights! We got to see a little bit of everything on the main card.

Brandon Vera defeated Krzysztof Soszynski by unanimous decision. I have to say I saw this one coming although I thought Vera would end it in the 2nd via TKO. Krz was outmatched. Vera looked good. I’m looking forward to watching him move up the LHW ranks.

Nate Marquardt defeated Demian Maia via a sick KO in :21 of the first round. I picked Marquardt to win via TKO by GNP in the 3rd. He caught Maia with a straight right & floored him with ease. Nate had the opportunity to jump all over Maia after the first punch but he held up realizing Maia was already out. Nate also called out Anderson Silva who was in attendance last night. Anderson defeated Nate back in July of 2007 at UFC 73 via TKO. I think Marquardt vs. Silva would be a great fight. Both of them have improved dramatically since 07’.

Jake Rosholt defeated Chris Leben via arm triangle at 1:30 in round 3. I picked Rosholt to win by submission in the 2nd. This fight went the way I thought it would. Rosholt is a monster on the ground & the world got to see that yesterday. Leben tapped prior to going unconscious but it was a very faint tap & the ref didn’t see it. Leben passed out but came to right away with no visible problems.

Thiago Silva defeated Keith Jardine by KO in 1:35 of the 1st round. I picked Silva to KO Jardine in the 2nd. A lot of people think Jardine is over rated. I don’t think so at all. He has beaten some tough opponents but Silva is on another level. I would like to see Silva get another shot against Machida.

Antonio Nogueira defeated Randy Couture in a classic match by unanimous decision. Randy is incredible. He’s 46 years old & he is still fighting the toughest guys in the world. Nog looked great as well. Randy’s record is now 16-10. That record is a little deceiving because all but 2 of his fights have been 5 round fights for titles. What other fighter in MMA can say that? Nog looked awesome but I don’t think he has a chance against Lesnar or Carwin. I wouldn’t mind seeing Nog fight Cain Velasquez. Randy signed a new 6 fight deal with the UFC. I think one of those fights needs to be against Dan Henderson. That would be an instant classic.

UFC 102 was the best card I have seen in some time. I can’t wait to see Franklin & Belfort go at it at UFC 103 in Texas. That card also includes Cro Cop vs. Dos Santos & Swick vs. Kampmann to see who will get a title shot against GSP.

UFC 102 Picks

August 26, 2009 · Posted in Uncategorized · 3 Comments

Marcus Aurelio will take on Evan Dunham in the first fight of the night. Aurelio is a seasoned vet coming off of 2 losses while Dunham is looking to stay undefeated at 8-0.

Dunham by TKO GNP in 2nd

Nick Catone is taking on Mark Munoz in what should be a decent fight. Both are coming off losses & looking to build a winning streak up.

Catone by KO in 3rd

Tim Hague is taking on Todd Duffee. These guys are 2 big heavyweights so I’m thinking we will see a slug fest.

Hague by decision

First off, I am glad that Mike Russow has made it to the UFC & is getting the opportunity to make his debut on a PPV under card against Justin McCully. Mike is 11-1 with his only loss coming back in 07′. He is a Chicago Police officer & all of us here in Chicago will be cheering him on. If it ends the way I’m sure he intends it to, we may get to see the replay during the main card.

Russow by submission in the 1st.

Gonzaga, who we all know made himself famous by his vicious KO of Cro Cop at UFC 70 will be facing Chris Tuchscherer. I’m looking for Gonzaga to finish this fight similar to his UFC 70 showing.

Gonzaga by KO (head kick) in the 2nd.

Ed Herman will be facing Aaron Simpson. Ed is coming off a unanimus decision win against Loiseau. Simpson on the other hand is undefeated with a 5-0 record. In my opinion, this is Simpson’s first test although McKenzie (Simpson’s last opponent) is no slouch. I think Herman takes it.

Herman by decision

Main Card

Brandon Vera will be taking on Krzysztof Soszynski (say that 10 times fast). Vera is coming off of a win against Mike Patt via leg kicks at UFC 96 while Soszynski is riding a 6 fight win streak including 3 by way of Kimura. I think this fight has the potential to be fight of the night. The TRUTH is…

Vera by TKO in the 2nd

Nate Marquardt will be taking on BJJ Blackbelt Demian Maia who doesn’t know what it feels like to lose coming in with a perfect 10-0 record. Marquardt hasn’t been submitted since 2003 & I don’t think he will submitted on Aug. 29th.

Marquardt by TKO GNP in the 3rd.

Chris Leben will take his 18-5 record into the Octagon to face Jake Rosholt. Although Leben has many more fights under his belt I think Rosholt takes this one.

Rosholt by submission in the 2nd.

Keith “The Dean Of Mean” Jardine coming off a loss to Rampage Jackson will face American Top Team’s Thiago Silva. Silva is coming off a loss to Machida at UFC 94.  Jardine’s last 2 of 3 losses have come by way of KO. I have the feeling we will see the same result at 102.

Silva by KO in the 2nd.

Randy “The Natural” Couture will face off against Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in a long awaited Heavyweight bout. Both fighters are coming of a loss and are looking to get back in to title contention. Nogueira is a submission master but Couture hasn’t been submitted since 02′. I think Randy’s gameplan will prevail again although I think this one goes to a decision.

Couture by unanimus decision.

As much as I would like to see Couture get a rematch against Brock I think the size difference is too much for Randy to overcome. But…with that said..I would never count “The Natural” out.

I’m looking forward to UFC 102. It should be a great night of fights! I will be on Twitter updating main card fight results in real time. Follow Me.

Sweet Home Chicago

August 25, 2009 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comment

This Saturday at UFC 102, Chicago Police Officer Mike Russow will make his UFC debut against Justin McCully. Mike is 11-1 with his only loss coming back in 2007. Mike is a submission specialist with 9 of his 11 wins coming by way of submission. Justin on the other hand is 9-4-2 coming off a win last year against Eddie Sanchez. 5 of Justin’s wins have come by way of a submission as well. I believe Russow has the upper hand on the ground & standing up. He has fought in many local shows here in Illinois as well as Vegas, Wisconsin & over seas in Japan. I’m looking for Russow to stand up early but I think this fight is going to go to the ground fairly quick. Mike will more than likely be looking for a N/S or RNC choke & end it as soon as possible. He will have the entire Chicago Police Dept. as well as fans all over Illinois behind him. I’m hoping this fight will be replayed during the main card. He is a tough HW & he is coming into the UFC at a perfect time. Good Luck Mike! Make us proud!

Vitor is a beast!

August 24, 2009 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comment

I was just listening to MMA Junkie Radio & Al “Stankie” Stankiewicz mentioned he used to work with Vitor Belfort. Al said the first time he met Belfort was in a gym in Brazil. Belfort was 17 years old & he weighed about 205lbs. Al claims Vitor bench pressed 475lbs. 3 times! That is F ‘n crazy! Vitor is currently training for his fight against Rich Franklin at UFC 103.
